July Releases

I can’t believe 2018 is half over! I’m really excited for July because not only is my birthday this month, but hopefully I’ll get a lot of reading and relaxing done. There are some interesting books being released in July. The one I’m most excited for is definitely the first one on this list. Here are some new novels I’m looking forward to:

The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas (July 31)

Synopsis:  There are no more cheerleaders in the town of Sunnybrook. First there was the car accident—two girls gone after hitting a tree on a rainy night. Not long after, the murders happened. Those two girls were killed by the man next door. The police shot him, so no one will ever know why he did it. Monica’s sister was the last cheerleader to die. After her suicide, Sunnybrook High disbanded the cheer squad. No one wanted to be reminded of the girls they lost. That was five years ago. Now the faculty and students at Sunnybrook High want to remember the lost cheerleaders. But for Monica, it’s not that easy. She just wants to forget. Only, Monica’s world is starting to unravel. There are the letters in her stepdad’s desk, an unearthed, years-old cell phone, a strange new friend at school. . . . Whatever happened five years ago isn’t over. Some people in town know more than they’re saying. And somehow Monica is at the center of it all. There are no more cheerleaders in Sunnybrook, but that doesn’t mean anyone else is safe.

I read Kara Thomas’s Little Monsters and LOVED it. Now I’m pretty much willing to read anything she writes haha. I’ve also been on a major mystery/thriller binge for a while now so this sounds like the perfect next read for me!

Wrong in All the Right Ways by Tiffany Brownlee (July 17)

wrong in all the right ways.jpg

Synopsis:  Everything in Emma’s life has always gone according to her very careful plans. But things take a turn toward the unexpected when she falls in love for the first time with the one person in the world who’s off-limits–her new foster brother, the gorgeous and tormented Dylan McAndrews. Meanwhile, Emma’s AP English class is reading Wuthering Heights, and she’s been assigned to mimic Bronte’s style in an epistolary format. With no one to confide in, she’s got a lot to write about. Emma and Dylan try to constrain their romance to the page–for fear of threatening Dylan’s chances of being adopted into another home. But the strength of first love is all-consuming, and they soon get enveloped in a passionate, secretive relationship with a very uncertain outcome.

Even though this isn’t quite the same situation, the premise reminds me a lot of Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. I read Forbidden a few years ago and it was one of my favorites for a very long time. I’ve been thinking about re-reading it, but maybe I’ll just read Wrong in All the Right Ways instead!

Notes from My Captivity by Kathy Parks (July 10)

notes from my captivity.jpg

Synopsis:  Adrienne Cahill cares about three things: getting into a great college; becoming a revered journalist like her idol, Sydney Declay; and making her late father proud of her. So when Adrienne is offered the chance to write an article that will get her into her dream school and debunk her foolish stepfather’s belief that a legendary family of hermits is living in the Siberian wilderness, there’s no question that she’s going to fly across the world. But the Russian terrain is even less forgiving than skeptical Adrienne, and when disaster strikes, none of their extensive preparations seem to matter. Now Adrienne’s being held captive by the family she was convinced didn’t exist, and her best hope for escape is to act like she cares about them, even if it means wooing the youngest son.

This sounds like a really unique novel. I think the journalism aspect seems really interesting. Being help captive by a family out in the wilderness sounds like it might be scary and mysterious. Having to trick their youngest son into thinking she likes him sounds like it might be funny in a dark way. I’m definitely interested to see which direction this story goes in.

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning (July 31)

Synopsis:  Ever since her best friend, Anna, drowned, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. A freak. A curse. A witch. A girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears offshore and, though the girl denies it, Evie is convinced that her best friend actually survived. That her own magic wasn’t so powerless after all. And, as the two girls catch the eyes—and hearts—of two charming princes, Evie believes that she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after. But her new friend has secrets of her own. She can’t stay in Havnestad, or on two legs, unless Evie finds a way to help her. Now Evie will do anything to save her friend’s humanity, along with her prince’s heart—harnessing the power of her magic, her ocean, and her love until she discovers, too late, the truth of her bargain.

First of all, look at this cover! It’s freaking gorgeous! But more than that, it sounds so interesting. This description was also included on Goodreads: “Everyone knows what happens in the end. A mermaid, a prince, a true love’s kiss. But before that young siren’s tale, there were three friends. One feared, one royal, and one already dead.” After reading this, I was totally hooked. Not to mention that I’ve heard so many amazing things about this book. I’m definitely hoping to pick this one up!

Scream All Night by Derek Milman (July 24)

scream all night

Synopsis:  Dario Heyward knows one thing: He’s never going back to Moldavia Studios, the iconic castle that served as the set, studio, and home to the cast and crew of dozens of cult classic B-horror movies. It’s been three years since Dario’s even seen the place, after getting legally emancipated from his father, the infamous director of Moldavia’s creature features. But then Dario’s brother invites him home to a mysterious ceremony involving his father and a tribute to his first film—The Curse of the Mummy’s Tongue. Dario swears his homecoming will be a one-time visit. A way for him to get closure on his past—and reunite with Hayley, his first love and costar of Zombie Children of the Harvest Sun, a production fraught with real-life tragedy—and say good-bye for good. But the unthinkable happens—Dario gets sucked back into the twisted world of Moldavia and the horrors, both real and imagined, he’s left there. With only months to rescue the sinking studio and everyone who has built their lives there, Dario must confront the demons of his past—and the uncertainties of his future. But can he escape the place that’s haunted him his whole life?

I’ve heard that this book is very unique and I’m always interested in reading something unusual. It sounds dark but also kind of funny. I was actually lucky to receive an ARC of Scream All Night at a bookish event last month so I’m planning to read it before the release.

  2. Sea Witch’s cover is so pretty. I can’t wait to see it in person. I’m seen lots of mermaid retellings as of late and am hoping this one ends up being a good one. My most anticipated release this month is Naomi Novik’s Spinning Silver. Have you read her before? Hope you enjoy all these releases!

    1. I hope Sea Witch is as wonderful on the inside as it looks on the outside too! I wonder how it will compare to To Kill a Kingdom. Hopefully I’ll read both of them by the end of the summer and find out. I haven’t read Naomi Novik before 😦 Would you recommend her books? Spinning Silver sounds really interesting! Thank you so much ♥
