Top Ten Tuesday: Popular Books That Lived Up To The Hype

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and has since been relocated to That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s theme is popular books that lived up to the hype. Making a list of these was actually quite difficult because I realized there are a lot of hyped up books that I still need to read. I had just enough though, so here are ten books that lived up to the hype for me:

 

1. Harry Potter (Series) by J.K. Rowling

I know this is such an obvious answer because it’s probably the most hyped series of our generation, but it’s true. It deserves every bit of attention that it gets. I love this series with all my heart and it will always be my all-time favorite. (By the way, Happee Birthday Harry!!)

 

2. The Hunger Games (Series) by Suzanne Collins

This is another answer that’s probably obvious but I can’t deny that I loved this series. It’s unique and exciting and the ending absolutely destroyed me. If I didn’t believe in taking good care of books I would’ve thrown Mockingjay at the wall because it just hurt me so much.

 

3. Percy Jackson (Series) by Rick Riordan

This is probably the first series I ever binge read. The Percy Jackson series is so creative, action-packed, and just all around epic. It got me and so many other kids interested in mythology. There are so many newer Rick Riordan books that I need to read but I’m sure that they live up to the hype too.

 

4. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

The first time I read this book, I enjoyed it but I didn’t absolutely love it. This is going to sound so cliché but when I decided to reread it a few years later, it really changed the way I looked at things. I had just gone through a bad breakup and it felt like the end of the world. The Fault in Our Stars really put things into perspective for me. Not only did it make me realize that there were more important things in life, but there was one quote that really resonated with me: “You don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world… but you do have some say in who hurts you.” This book helped me feel better when I really needed it and I’m forever grateful for that. I’ve read it several times since then I honestly believe that it lives up to the hype.

 

5. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

I’ve always been a reader but I wasn’t involved in the book community at the time I read Fangirl so I hadn’t heard all the hype surrounding it. I actually read it for school during the summer before my senior year and it was perfect at that time in my life, when I was getting ready to go off to college. However, I do think that even if I had read it before or after that summer, I would have loved it regardless. I loved Cath and it managed to be cute while talking about some serious topics. Now that I know about all the hype, I definitely think it makes sense.

 

6. Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

I waited to read this book until about a month before Love, Simon came out so that the plot would still be fresh in my mind. In my opinion, both the book and movie lived up to the hype! Each one is an overload of cuteness! I love Simon and his friends and I can’t wait to read Leah on the Offbeat (which is another hyped book on my TBR).

 

7. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

I can’t believe I waited so long to read this book. I’ve really been missing out 😦 It’s absolutely amazing! From the characters to the world, I love everything about it. I’m reading Crooked Kingdom right now so I can’t speak for it yet, but if it’s nearly as good as Six of Crows then it will live up to the hype too!

 

8. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

I’ve heard some mixed reviews about this book but it definitely got a lot of hype. I listened to it on audio last fall and it got me into both audiobooks and adult thrillers. The narrators did an amazing job but I also really liked the story so it lived up to the hype for me.

 

9. One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

We sell newspapers where I work so I read the NYT Best Sellers list every Sunday. I had seen this book on the list for weeks and weeks so I finally decided to give it a try. To say the least, I can see why it’s been on the list for so long. This is one of my all-time favorite YA thrillers now. Also, this is another audiobook that’s done really well!

 

10. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I heard so much about this book on blogs and BookTube. I’m so glad I decided to pick it up because it’s unlike any other book I’ve ever read. The story is captivating and the characters are so well-written. I can’t recommend this book enough!

    1. Thanks so much!! ❤ Aw 😦 Was there a reason you didn’t like them? Yes, I love them!! I was at an indie bookstore the other day and they had the entire Heroes of Olympus series on sale so I had to get it. I’m so excited to read more of Rick Riordan’s books 🙂

      1. Maybe it’s because I haven’t read The Grisha trilogy so the world confuse me haha. Yaaay if you like PJO then I’m sure you’ll like all his other books, they’re just as awesome as PJO!! Hope you like the happy reading 💕

      2. I do wonder how reading the Grisha trilogy first would have affected my experience with reading the Six of Crows duology. I just ordered all three books though so I guess I’ll be learning more about the world soon 🙂

  4. Haha anyone who says Harry Potter isn’t that great has to nuts imo. 😉 And Hunger Games also destroyed me when I read it years ago! Some people believe it’s overyhyped due to it having a movie franchise, but I honestly think it really was one of a kind back then. Terrific picks!!

    1. Hahaha I totally agree 🙂 Harry Potter is just so lovable! Yeah, it’s really sad that people feel that way about The Hunger Games now because it really was an enjoyable series. I also think it was important because it made dystopians more popular in general. Thank you!! ❤

  8. I almost grabbed Simon vs the Homo Sapien Agenda last time I saw it. I guess I have to now since we seem to have a similar taste in books. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo sounds good too. Thanks for this list. 😊

    1. Yes!! It’s definitely one of my favorite reads so far this year ❤ The author just announced that she’s writing another book about the students at Bayview High! I think it’s about Bronwyn’s sister and some of her friends and I’m super excited for it!

      They’re some of my all-time favorites and I hope you love them when you get to them!! 🙂
