I Heart Characters: Anti-Establishment Group of Badasses

I Heart Characters is a weekly meme hosted by Dani @ Perspective of a Writer. Each week she supplies a topic and the participants respond with a character or group of characters that fits that category. There are so many amazing characters and this is a chance to celebrate them 🙂

This week’s topic is Anti-Establishment Group of Badasses which Dani describes as “A group of 3 or more characters that belong together as they fight the “good” fight… Good being interpreted any way you like!” This is my first time participating and I think it’s the perfect topic to start with because I’m currently reading Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo and the Six of Crows duology has the most badass group of characters of all time!

Six of Crows – Synopsis

Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price–and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone…

A convict with a thirst for revenge.

A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager.

A runaway with a privileged past.

A spy known as the Wraith.

A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.

A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.

Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don’t kill each other first.

The Anti-Establishment Group of Badasses

kazKaz Brekker

Kaz is basically a criminal mastermind. He’s the leader of the Dregs, one of the most prominent gangs in Ketterdam, a city known for its crime and vices. He’s always one step ahead of everyone else and uses his brilliant mind to manipulate others into giving him what he wants. He has a tragic past but you’d never know it because he never shows any sign of weakness.

inej

Inej Ghafa

Inej was stolen from her family in Ravka at a young age and sold into a brothel in Kerch until Kaz convinced Per Haskell to give her a contract. Now apart of Kaz’s gang, she is known as “The Wraith” because she is able to move about with out being seen or heard.  She is strong and agile, able to climb almost anything. She’s also quiet and tough. She uses her abilities to spy and gather information.

nina.pngNina Zenik

Nina is a Ravkan Heartrender, a type of Grisha that can take control of another person’s body, for example slowing their pulse, removing the air from their lungs, or even crushing their organs. Although she has a lot of potentially dangerous abilities, she uses her powers only when necessary. She is fun, adventurous, and flirty. She’s also confident and a very caring, loyal friend.

Jesper Fahey

Jesper is light-hearted and sarcastic. He came to Ketterdam to study at the university, but ended up developing a serious gambling habit. Now he has a debt so he’s trying to earn money by helping Kaz on his heist. He is very talented with guns so he serves as the crew’s sharpshooter.

matthias.pngMatthias Helvar

Matthias is a former drüskelle, a high-ranking soldier in the Fjerdan army. At the beginning of the story, he is in a Kerch prison because of a misunderstanding involving Nina. The crew breaks him out so that he can help with the heist. They want him to share his knowledge of Fjerdan institutions but he is reluctant because he is feeling bitter and resentful after spending a year in prison.

Wylan Van Eck

Wylan is the son of Jan Van Eck, the man who hired Kaz and his crew to perform the heist. As the son of a merchant, he is more refined than the rest of the crew. He’s also a bit shy and awkward because he had very little social interaction growing up. However, he is well-educated. He serves the crew as an engineer and inventor by drawing maps, inventing scientific tools, and building bombs for them.

  1. Awww WELCOME to the meme KELLY! ❤️ I LOVE your choice… I haven’t read Six of Crows yet (frankly I’m kind of scared, I’m notorious for my unpopular opinions and what if I don’t love the gang?! >.< That would be the worst!) but I feel like I have after reading your post! This is the first time I realize that there are only 2 females in the group! And I LOVE the sound of their abilities!! You have gone a long way to convincing me that I NEED to read this series, especially with a 3rd book coming out?! (Is that right?)

Oh BTW I can't add you to the link up because I don't have your email address. Feel free to go to the bottom of the Sanzo-ikkou post and add yourself or leave me a comment on the same post and I'll add you! Again welcome, I was so excited to see this, YAY!

    1. Aw thank you so much!! ❤ I totally understand being scared to dislike it because it’s so popular, but I think this one is definitely worth the risk! Six of Crows was the best book I read in the first half of the year and probably one of my favorites of all time. Both of the females in this group are SUPER badass haha! They’re both really strong and inspiring. I agree, you need to read it 😉 King of Scars is the first book in a separate duology but it takes place in the same world (the Grishaverse) and I believe there are some of the same characters!! It would be awesome to catch up on reading Leigh Bardugo’s books in time for the release 🙂

Okay thanks for letting me know! I linked my post. And thanks again for being so welcoming ❤ I’m already really enjoying participating 🙂

    1. I’m a little less than halfway through the second book and I’m really enjoying it. I’m thrilled to be learning even more about each character because they’re all so unique and lovable in their own ways. I hope you enjoy it when you get to it and I can’t wait to hear what you think 🙂

      1. I totally agree! Sometimes having so many perspectives can be overwhelming but I think it’s done really well in this duology. Especially with each character carrying out a different part of the plan, it’s awesome to get to read about all of the action!
