September Releases

I moved into school about two weeks ago, so I’ve been trying really hard to make time for blogging and reading. It’s been pretty difficult but hopefully once I settle in, I’ll be more active on here. Anyways, it’s time for my monthly anticipated releases post. Here are some September releases that I’m looking forward to:

 

Wildcard by Marie Lu (September 18)

Synopsis:  Emika Chen barely made it out of the Warcross Championships alive. Now that she knows the truth behind Hideo’s new NeuroLink algorithm, she can no longer trust the one person she’s always looked up to, who she once thought was on her side.

Determined to put a stop to Hideo’s grim plans, Emika and the Phoenix Riders band together, only to find a new threat lurking on the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. Someone’s put a bounty on Emika’s head, and her sole chance for survival lies with Zero and the Blackcoats, his ruthless crew. I loved Warcross so much and I’ve been waiting for its sequel alllll year!! I have to know what happens!! I also need more of the lovable characters and the amazing world Marie Lu has built. If Wildcard is anywhere near as good as the first book, I’m going to love it.

 

Not Even Bones by Rebecca Schaeffer (September 4)

Synopsis:  Dexter meets This Savage Song in this dark fantasy about a girl who sells magical body parts on the black market — until she’s betrayed.

Nita doesn’t murder supernatural beings and sell their body parts on the internet—her mother does that. Nita just dissects the bodies after they’ve been “acquired.” But when her mom brings home a live specimen, Nita decides she wants out — dissecting living people is a step too far.

But when she tries to save her mother’s victim, she ends up sold on the black market in his place — because Nita herself is a supernatural being. Now Nita is on the other side of the bars, and there is no line she won’t cross to escape and make sure no one can ever capture her again.

Nita did a good deed, and it cost her everything. Now she’s going to do a lot of bad deeds to get it all back.

The comparison to Dexter was the first thing that caught my eye. I haven’t seen the whole show but I loved the seasons I’ve seen. After reading the whole synopsis, I think the premise sounds so interesting and unique. A black market for supernatural beings’ body parts?! I’m really excited to see where this one goes.

 

For a Muse of Fire by Heidi Heilig (September 25)

Synopsis:  Jetta’s family is famed as the most talented troupe of shadow players in the land. With Jetta behind the scrim, their puppets seem to move without string or stick—a trade secret, they say. In truth, Jetta can see the souls of the recently departed and bind them to the puppets with her blood. But the old ways are forbidden ever since the colonial army conquered their country, so Jetta must never show, never tell. Her skill and fame are her family’s way to earn a spot aboard the royal ship to Aquitan, where shadow plays are the latest rage, and where rumor has it the Mad King has a spring that cures his ills. Because seeing spirits is not the only thing that plagues Jetta. But as rebellion seethes and as Jetta meets a young smuggler, she will face truths and decisions that she never imagined—and safety will never seem so far away.

This is another book with a very interesting premise. The concept of shadow players sounds so intriguing and I can’t wait to learn more about them. I’ve also heard great things about Heidi Heilig’s other books, the The Girl from Everywhere series.

 

The Lantern’s Ember by Colleen Houck (September 11)

Synopsis:  Welcome to a world where nightmarish creatures reign supreme.

Five hundred years ago, Jack made a deal with the devil. It’s difficult for him to remember much about his mortal days. So, he focuses on fulfilling his sentence as a Lantern—one of the watchmen who guard the portals to the Otherworld, a realm crawling with every nightmarish creature imaginable. Jack has spent centuries jumping from town to town, ensuring that nary a mortal—or not-so-mortal—soul slips past him. That is, until he meets beautiful Ember O’Dare.

Seventeen, stubborn, and a natural-born witch, Ember feels a strong pull to the Otherworld. Undeterred by Jack’s warnings, she crosses into the forbidden plane with the help of a mysterious and debonair vampire—and the chase through a dazzling, dangerous world is on. Jack must do everything in his power to get Ember back where she belongs before both the earthly and unearthly worlds descend into chaos.

This synopsis reminded me of the part in the Percy Jackson series where Percy and his friends travel to the underworld. Because I loved that part of the series, I think I would really enjoy this novel about a watchmen for the Otherworld. I also love supernatural beings like witches and vampires so this books sounds like a perfect fit for me!

 

The Deepest Roots by Miranda Asebedo (September 18)

Synopsis:  Cottonwood Hollow, Kansas, is a strange place. For the past century, every girl has been born with a special talent, like the ability to Fix any object, Heal any wound, or Find what is missing.

Best friends Rome, Lux, and Mercy all have similar talents, but to them, their abilities often feel like a curse. Rome may be able to Fix anything she touches, but that won’t help her mom pay rent or make it any easier to confide in Lux and Mercy about what’s going on at home. And Rome isn’t the only one. Lux has been hiding bigger, more dangerous secrets.

As Rome struggles to keep her friendships close, she discovers the truth about life in Cottonwood Hollow—that friends are stronger than curses, that trust is worth the risk, and sometimes, what you’ve been looking for has been under your feet the whole time.

Like I said in reference to The Lantern’s Ember, I love supernatural beings like witches. I’ve been really interested in witchcraft since I first traveled to Salem, MA about 10 years ago. I’ve been back there a bunch of times since because I love to learn more about witchcraft. The special talents the girls in this book have are one of the main things that drew my attention to this book.
